This isn’t a game about pushing graphical limits. It would be interesting to see elements from Super Mario Land for Game Boy appear, but sadly, they do not. If you’ve seen it before, you’ll see it again. For example, there are Goomba designs from SMB 1, 3, SMW, NSMB, and the Mario All Stars incarnations. There are elements taken from all the different games. The graphics are perfect for a Mario game. There are many surprises along the way I do not wish to spoil. Depending on the campaign, there’s generally Bowser causing trouble, and you have to stop him.

There are actually 4 stories, or maybe 1. You can replay any level you wish, and can use Start + Select to quickly exit a level you’ve already beaten once before. You don’t have to start from level 1-1 to 8-4. Some areas are like Mario World with the overhead map, other segments are like a side scrolling de-make of Mario 64 with star collecting and locked doors acting as a hub between levels. It’s the Mega Man formula applied to the Mario series. The game is a celebration and continuation of the Mario world assuming Mario stayed on one path and didn’t constantly try to change and innovate itself.

Not quite as ridiculous as The Lost Levels, but they’re clever and enjoyable. There are a few levels remade from classic games, but many of the others were designed to be incredibly challenging. Link stabs things and controls much like he does in Zelda II. Toad at first doesn’t seem like much but he has a secret you ought to figure out for yourself. Luigi jumps higher and responds a bit less sharply. Every character plays slightly differently. There is a world map like Super Mario World, a character select screen like Mario 2, to even include Link from Zelda II. Mushrooms, Fire Flowers, Ice Flowers, Power Leaves, Hammer Bros Suit, Tanooki Suit, Yoshi, the Goomba’s Shoe, and a few others. Enemies and power ups from Super Mario Bros 1, 2, 3, Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros make an appearance. This article is exploring a fan made project for the PC, Super Mario Brothers X.Įvery classic Mario game all blended into one. After playing this, it might ruin you for other platformers to come. This game will test all your skill, patience, draw upon all your experiences. Only Mario veterans should attempt playing it, or people with a strong need to find a good platforming game. This game is a masterpiece of platforming action. Adventure Island, Donkey Kong Country 1(but not 2 or 3, they didn’t include the big guy), I made it most of the way through TMNT 1 for the NES, the Contra series(now THAT was challenging!), Earthworm Jim(before the reduced difficulty HD remake), Joe & Mac, Super Star Wars series, a few X-Men games, and of course Mario. Trine, Dark Void Zero are a few modern examples of the genre. I hope a lot of these are ringing a bell of familiarity and fondness. I loved the entire Mega Man NES and SNES series, I actually mastered Zelda II, the classic side scrolling Metroids, Castlevanias for NES and SNES, much of the Id and Apogee catalog back in the “shareware” age such as the Commander Keen series, Cosmo, Duke Nukem 1, 2, and Manhattan Project, Monster Bash, Jill of the Jungle. Since then, I’ve enjoyed many in the genre. It set the standard for all side scrolling platforms to come. Maybe my coordination just wasn’t good enough. I never beat it until a decade or two later. The first Nintendo game I ever played was Super Mario Brothers.
